What’s new:

Google has started releasing Chrome OS version 78 to eligible Chromebooks. While this version does have a number of great new features, we have also found that there is an incompatibility with the Sphero Edu app. With Chrome OS 78, some Sphero robots will no longer connect successfully. We recommend withholding from this OS update if compatibility with BOLT and Mini is vital.

Q: Which robots are affected?

A: Sphero BOLT, Sphero Mini, R2-D2, R2-Q5, and BB-9E.

Q: How did this happen?

A: On occasion, operating system updates can change how Bluetooth communication occurs. We need to update our apps to ensure compatibility when this happens.

Q: What is Sphero doing about this, and when is it going to be fixed?

A: We are working diligently to uncover the core problem and find a solution. Once this work is complete, we will release a new version of the Sphero Edu app on Chrome OS.

Q: I’m a teacher. What can I do to prevent my school Chromebooks from being updated to 78?

A: Google provides a number of tools for Chrome administrators, including the ability to turn auto-updates off and “pin” their Chromebook to a specific version of Chrome OS. Learn more about these features here.

Q: What if I’ve already updated to Chrome OS 78 and cannot connect to my robots?

A: Our Support Team is standing by to assist you. Please email support@sphero.com with Chrome OS Update Issue in the subject line.

We appreciate your patience and will keep everyone updated on the status of this situation as we continue to make progress.
